Why not send a terminator unit even farther back. I thought they established that traveling back in time in the terminator universe is limited to a few decades.
Ever heard of The 10th Kingdom? A miniseries that came out in 2000, about a lady and her father getting transported into a fairy tale universe, part of the beginning does take place in New York. Overall I thought it was fun to watch but it did get extremely silly at times.
